A student who has perfect attendance throughout twelve years of schooling will spend just 13% of their time in a school. The rest of the time they spend learning - 87% of their time- is spent outside the classroom. Obviously, partnerships between school and home to strengthen learning are critical elements of student success.

"I can not say enough good things about the impact of the Family Resource Center during this first year... Several innovative activities have been implemented, which resulted in more frequent and sustained parental involvement.

"The Family Resource Center has been instrumental in designing, developing and implementing activities to engage parents of older students in school and improve communication between families and school, and between families and their children.

"Thanks for all of your efforts in assisting with the development of the Family Resource Center at Florence- Carlton Middle School."

-- Mark Neill, Ed.D., Principal
Florence-Carlton Middle School, Florence

Researchers have identified three factors families have control over that explain almost all of the differences in school achievement:
  1. School attendance
  2. Reading materials in the home
  3. Amount of time spent watching television
When schools include parents in the learning environment, they are able to better support learning outside the classroom.
